Serra da Estrela is the name given to the mountain range and the mountain where the highest altitudes in mainland Portugal are found, making it the second highest mountain in Portugal (only surpassed by Mount Pico in the Azores). It is part of the larger mountain system known as the Central System, specifically within the Montejunto-Estrela sub-system, which extends southwest to northeast from the Montejunto mountain range. Serra da Estrela is an area of scenic beauty within the Serra da Estrela Natural Park, which, since its establishment on July 16, 1976, has become the largest protected area in Portuguese territory.
In addition to its snow, extraordinary flora and fauna, travelers are also drawn to its colossal topography, highlighted by the Cântaro Magro, as well as the region’s rich human, cultural, historical, and gastronomic heritage.
Serra da Estrela reaches its highest point at 1993 meters, near Torre. This peak marks the boundary of four parishes: Unhais da Serra (Covilhã), São Pedro (Manteigas), Loriga (Seia), and Alvoco da Serra (Seia). Therefore, the highest point of mainland Portugal is shared by the three municipalities to which these parishes belong: Covilhã, Manteigas, and Seia.
The correct orthometric altitude of Serra da Estrela at this point, rounded to the nearest meter, is 1993 meters according to adjustments made by measurements from the Army Geographic Institute. To reach 2000 meters, a 7-meter tower has been constructed.
Snow
While Portugal is typically known for its sun, warmth, and beaches, in winter it can also be a country of snow and winter sports. Why not make the most of the cold? Among both amateurs and professionals, the central massif fills with snow enthusiasts who find creative ways to turn it into a source of fun. Experiencing a vast blanket of snow is simply magical, especially for those who can’t get through winter without feeling the thrill of skiing down various mountains.
In Portugal, Serra da Estrela is ideal for those who want to start skiing or snowboarding, or for those who want to “scratch the itch” of skiing so close to home, as this is the only place in the country where you can ski, sled, snowboard, or engage in other snow-related activities. There are several slopes with support facilities, as well as synthetic snow slopes that allow skiing year-round. It’s a case of “get out while staying in”!
The entrance to the Serra da Estrela Natural Park can be reached in about 30 minutes by car from Quinta da Palmeira – Country House Retreat & Spa.
