One of the things that makes Portugal, and especially the region where I live, special is its countless river beaches. My region, Beira, is one of the least touristy in Portugal. The nearest beach, Figueira da Foz, is about an hour's drive away. But you don't have to go that far to enjoy a beach experience. There are river beaches everywhere.
Types and Sizes
Praia fluvial (plural: Praias fluviais) means river beach. River beaches come in various shapes and sizes. Some river beaches have only a small strip of grass, and you can easily walk down to the river, while others have banks filled with true "beach sand" in the summer. Some have showers, bathrooms and changing rooms, lifeguards, a bar for snacks and drinks, barbecue areas, and playgrounds.
Other river beaches are nothing more than a natural stretch of the river with simple steps leading into the water. Sometimes, a pool is built next to the river, filled with river water.
On the Aldeias do Xisto website, you'll find a map of all the "official" river beaches in the Central region. But there are many others. Just check out the YouTube page "Praias Fluviais de Portugal," which lists river beaches across the country. Even there, not all beaches are listed.
My 5 favorite river beaches
Why so good?
River beaches are frequented mainly by Portuguese people, and this is always a pleasant experience. There's often a bar, a barbecue grill, or a picnic area where entire families can grill and eat. Many beaches have barely been discovered by tourists, and I consider them true gems. The river water is wonderfully refreshing and crystal clear.
From Quinta da Palmeira – Country House Retreat & Spa, my five favorite river beaches are a 10- to 20-minute drive away, along winding mountain roads.
