The schist village of Piódão is one of the 12 "Historic Villages of Portugal." Piódão is nestled in the Serra do Açor, offering stunning views, springs, and meadows. The historic village of Piódão resembles a nativity scene, with the houses blending harmoniously into the landscape. At night, when the residents light up their homes, the village becomes even more beautiful than during the day.
Stroll the streets of this unique mountain village, where time seems to stand still. All the houses are built entirely of slate, including the roofs. Slate is common in this region and is used in house construction and flooring. This creates a uniform appearance, punctuated by blue-painted window and door frames. The window and door frames are all painted the same shade of blue.
The unusual shade of blue used has a practical origin: it is said that this unusual color was the only one available in the only store in the area. Given the village's isolated location, it was not easy for residents to move to other locations. This isolation has preserved the characteristics of this ancient community.
Among the small houses, almost all two-story, the charming white-plastered Parish Church, dedicated to Our Lady of Conception, stands out. The church, with its unique cylindrical buttresses, was built in the early 19th century by local residents using their own gold and money.
Given its isolated location at the foot of the mountains, Piódão was once an ideal refuge for those fleeing justice. It is believed that one of the assassins of Inês de Castro, who managed to escape the wrath of Pedro I, hid here (14th century).
A historic town that played a less significant role in Portugal's history, but is known for its beautiful location in the Serra do Açor. Definitely worth a visit.
Hiking trails have been established from Piódão. One of them leads to Foz d'Égua and Chás d'Égua, the village of the Portuguese "Indiana Jones." In this village, he's building bridges, paths, and a chapel with a statue of a saint. It's a feast for the eyes. The few steep hills you occasionally have to climb are worth it, as they lead you to the most beautiful spots in the Serra do Açor, located in central Portugal.
From Quinta da Palmeira – Country House Retreat & Spa, Piódão is a 25-minute drive along a beautiful, winding mountain road.
