Visit the Foz d’Égua sanctuary, a lost village nestled in virtually untouched nature. It's just 2.5 kilometers from the beloved historic village of Piódão and is accessible from Piódão via a well-marked trail. You can also drive to Foz d'Égua from Piódão, a journey of approximately 10 minutes. The route follows beautiful mountain roads, well-paved but sometimes narrow and with some sharp curves. However, the views are breathtaking.Near Foz d'Égua, you'll find a unique river beach, Praia Fluvial, nestled in a small valley completely surrounded by mountains.
A fantastic 20-minute hike winds along one of these slopes, climbing to a small chapel. There's a suspension bridge, a bridge built entirely of local stone, and a niche with a mural. Along the way, you'll encounter many other beautiful, unique, and unexpected sights. The entire area was created over decades by the owner, a man sometimes called the Portuguese Indiana Jones online. He built bridges, paths, a sanctuary, and a chapel with a statue of a saint. It's a feast for the eyes!
The river is wonderful for swimming. In summer, the dam's bulkheads are closed, allowing the water to flow slowly but still deep enough for swimming. The water is quite cold, but that's to be expected. It's meltwater drained from higher elevations: cold but crystal clear.
From Quinta da Palmeira – Country House Retreat & Spa, Foz d’Égua can be reached in 30 minutes via a beautiful, winding mountain road.
