Fraga da Pena

Fraga da Pena waterfall is a beautiful mountain cascade located near the Schist village of Benfeita, in Arganil, Coimbra District, within the Serra do Açor. This waterfall, originating from a geological fault, is one of the most remarkable natural features in the protected landscape of the Serra do Açor.

The waters of this cascade flow through a narrow valley in the mountains, creating a micro-landscape suddenly filled with lush vegetation covering the schist rocks. The waterfall’s drop reaches 20 meters, starting from the Barroca das Degraínhas, where the water forms an initial sheet before cascading down in smaller falls.

To photograph the waterfall up close, you’ll need to step into the water to reach a small “island” nearby.

Reviews:

  • “Naturally Wonderful”
A place of indescribable beauty. It’s somewhat hidden, just five minutes from the main road. This space where nature blends with small paths and bridges is full of silence and light.

  • “Spectacular Waterfall”
The waterfall is spectacular and absolutely worth visiting! We went at the end of May, and it was still very much worth the visit! It’s sensational… A fantastic waterfall, almost 20 meters high, and one of the most beautiful I’ve seen in our country! The surrounding area is quite pleasant and intriguing, with some original benches made from logs to rest on your way there. Do the walk, without hesitation!

Fraga da Pena waterfall is only about 10 minutes by car from Quinta da Palmeira – Country House Retreat & Spa.
